BLOWIN' YOUR MIND SO YOU GOT TO GET INTO: [Dec. 29th, 2009|09:27 am]

Here, have a bunch of fives, motherjeffer!

Top Five Songs:

1. 'Bad Romance', Lady Gaga.
2. 'Russian Roulette', Rihanna.
3. 'Paparazzi', Lady Gaga.
4. 'The Performance of my Life', Dame Shirley Bassey.
5. 'The Fear', Lily Allen.

Top Five Records:

Erm...

1. The Fame Monster, Lady Gaga.
2. The Fame, Lady Gaga*.
3. It's Not Me, It's You, Lily Allen.
4. Erm...
5. Mostly I've just been listening to the Wicked OBC, and a lot of Daniel Johnston. I'm bored of being ahead of the zeitgeist. Being ahead of the zeitgeist is so 2008.

* - on a technicality, because this was released in the US last year, and looked a lot sooner than that, so me and my faggy brethren all had this on last year's lists. But I've still listened to it more than any other album released in 2009. Or two thousand and SHITMUSIC, as I never call it, but totally should.

Top Five Films:

This has been a vintage year for children's films.

1. Where the Wild Things Are (which - despite all the deeply patronising things that have been said about it - follows 'child logic' better than any other film I've ever seen, and is not so much about being a child but being a human; odd, how much I relate to a little boy who looks like a girl wearing a suit that's supposed to be a wolf but looks more like a sheep. When we saw this in the cinema, a little girl got up off her seat and danced at the end. And I wanted to join her. Marvellous.)
2. Up.
3. Coraline.
4. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
5. IDK, This is It?

Top One Most Stupidly Boring Peice Of Shit Film That Was Supposed To Be About Swedish Vampires And Be Exciting Because The Book Was But Turned Out To Be Weird-Looking Kids Talking Really Quietly And Shots Of Snow Blowing About For, Like, Twenty Minutes At A Time:

1. Let the Right One In.

Top Five Joint Top One TV Shows:

* 1. Weeds (in drama)
* 1. Battlestar Galactica (in sci-fi)
* 1. Being Human (in, erm, British supernatural)
* 1. Glee (in comedy)
* 1. Skins (in best... whatever Skins is, IDK)

Top One WTF Moment:

1. The Execution of Gary Glitter WTF?!?!?!?

Should I do more? I might do more, let me know.

THE END OF TIME: [Dec. 27th, 2009|09:54 am]

We're just back from Callum's Mum's house - and a good time was had by all - and I have a couple of job applications to finish, and a load of shit to get done for the Council (Council Tax and Housing Benefits stuff, it's all supposed to be done by the same people), but I needed to sign in and log my first reactions to 'The End of Time part one' before I read too much of what the ming mongs had to say about it.

THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS SPOILERS AHEAD DO NOT ENTER RAH RAH ROMA MAMA, etc. )

Eeh. Excited, excited.

EDIT: I stole this from [info]curlybeach, this is literally how excited I am whenever I think about 'part two':

Oh! Wasn't the Catherine Tate special odd? Good, though, she's a good character comic, and the structure really worked for it. I've given up on soaps, so mostly we just watched anything with Tennant in it, and flicked between Nigella's Christmas thing and Bear Grylls: Born Prick Tease, because Callum was waiting for him to get his bum out.

Hooray! I'm happily on my Christmas train home, sailing through lovely festive countryside - frozen ponds! - and watching Seinfeld on DVD. Happy Christmas one and all!

A vague account of the weekend [Dec. 21st, 2009|11:18 am]

* Went to the Nine Carols show at the Bloomsbury Theatre on Friday night which was excellent. I can't remember any of the scientists' names now, but I liked the one who did his alternative awards ceremony, and I liked Stewart Lee even though his material was ancient. The elderlyish bloke sitting next to us looked totally mystified by Gary Le Strange.

* Accidentally heard Dotun Adebayo when I was listening to the radio late on Saturday night. He's rotten, isn't he? He first hosted a dreadful discussion about Leslie Hughes being sacked as Manchester city manager, then he talked about the snow in America with what he described as "native New Yorkers" as if we're supposed to be impressed by this. Real mericans? Live on the radio? Zowie! The best bit was when he said "'I'm just going outside, I may be some time' as Captain Scott famously said." Um, alright, whatever.

* Finished my nephew/niece Christmas shopping at the Science Museum/Natural History Museum shops. Got great stuff, including space ice cream and a T-Rex glove puppet!

* Went on a tube walk around the lovely houses and lovely food shops of Kensignton. Holland Park's good though, isn't it? It has a Kyoto Garden and peacocks.

It's Saturday night, I'm in alone and boycotting Match of the Day in a football related huff to watch Love Actually. Therefore, in no particular order, my favourite LPs of 2009. I'll try and write a bit about them, but as usual when I try and write about music I'll probably just end up saying "I like it!" because I'm rubbish at describing music I like.

Love Actually's not bad really is it?

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Pains of Being Pure at Heart

I may have moaned a bit about their gig a couple of weeks ago, but I still think the album's great. Fuzzy indie rock, vaguely reminiscent of Buzzcocks. Great stuff. This is Contender

God Help The Girl - God Help The Girl

So this is Stuart Murdoch's B&S spinoff - the story of a mixed up girl sung by three singers he found through internet auditions. And it's beautiful. So listen to the title track:

Moofish Catfish - Moofish Catfish

And the self-titled albums keep coming. I saw Moofish Catfish supporting someone - I can't remember who - earlier this year, and I picked up their album. I like it. Here's About This Girl.

Slow Club - Yeah So? (£4.98! Amazing bargain!)

As you may have seen, I went to their gig this week. This is It Doesn't Always Have to be Beautiful:

Pocketbooks - Flight Paths

I've talked about Pocketbooks loads on here. I <3 them absolutely and I've already shared far too much of their album probly, but have another track anyway - Every Good Time We Ever Had:

The Duckworth Lewis Method - The Duckworth Lewis Method

It's not every year that a concept album about cricket comes out, and it's not every year that a track written from the point of view of Mike Gatting is released. Jiggery Pokery:

MJ Hibbett & The Validators - Regardez, Ecoutez et Repetez

Silly, witty, fun, catchy, INDIE! I've uploaded this track, because although it's written from the point of the view of the band, I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed as a punter. It's called We're Old and We're Tired (And We Want to Go Home):

I don't know, you wait all year for a gig at the Union Chapel and then two come along at once. Last night I went to see Danny Boy Kitson, who was his usual touching, thought-provoking and hilarious self.

Tonight was Slow Club putting in a late bid for Gig of the Year, with a terrific show.

They were everything that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart weren't last week - they engaged with the crowd, they were funny, they seemed like they were having fun being there, and in addition they were wonderful - Becky has superb voice, full of character. And at the end of a great gig, what better way to end than with an encore of Christmas songs and inviting all the support acts back on stage for some fun:

I AM JANE AND I LOVE TO RIDE AN ELEPHANT: [Dec. 17th, 2009|03:10 pm]

Oh, better late than never.

Day 01 | Your favourite song

Well, this is already too hard, I may as well give up now.

Favourite songs are so subjective, dependant on the day, the time of day, the time of year, what I'm doing, what I'm feeling, what I'm wearing, how my hair looks, who I'm with. The most played song on my iPod is 'Defying Gravity', but that's probably only because sometimes, when I need to feel like, actually, everything's going to be okay, because no matter what anyone else thinks I'm still ace and one day I will rule the world (ahem), I hold down the click wheel and scroll through to 4:11 (I like a bit of pre-amble, as evidenced by this extremely long-winded post), and let it play through to the end. 'SO IF YOU CARE TO FIND ME! LOOK TO THE WESTERN SKY!' and 'And nobody, in all of Oz, no Wizard that there is or was is ever gonna bring! ME! DOOOOOWN!' just make me feel better about everything.

(Side note, when Callum and I argue - usually because I'm being a whinging pain in the arse or there's something bothering him and he won't tell me I'm like, 'tell me, tell me, tell me' - it pretty much plays out like the first forty seconds of this song. Because if Callum wants something, he puts his head down and gets the job done, whereas if I want something and something gets in my way that I'm not entirely comfortable with I'm like 'UH UH, has to be on my terms'. For the record, I don't either is... unadmirable. 'Why couldn't you have stayed calm for once instead of FLYING OFF THE HANDLE' indeed!)

But the second most played song on my iPod is 'Freakshow', by The Gothic Archies, which is so much my theme tune that if ever I were to have a sitcom based on my life, it'd be prefaced by 'even geeks even other freaks hate the freakshow' and a montage of images of my in funny hats, bumping into people and falling over and causing traffic pile-ups and stuff. Have a listen, it's a good song.

And then, at the minute, I'm listening to a lot of Daniel Johnston, because Christmas makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. Happy-sad. And I'm listening to Daniel Johnston because, before that, I was listening to Karen O's cover of 'Worried Shoes' from the Where The Wild Things Are OST, because it is my last minute film of the year (more on that story later).

So, right now, my favourite song is 'Story of an Artist', from Don't Be Scared (if that song doesn't break your heart then I'm not interested in knowing you, bye).

But in half an hour's time, my favourite song will probably be 'Dance in the Dark'. Or 'December Will Be Magic Again'. Or 'Tarzan and Jane'.

And that's what is brilliant about songs.

WHINGE AGAINST THE MACHINE: [Dec. 17th, 2009|12:02 pm]

michaelbush
Am I back? I think I'm back. Mostly to thank everyone for their lovely gifties and cards. I love Christmas, even if - in my mind - it's sort of become The Day That New Doctor Who Is On. OMG WILF. Ahem.

Not doing Christmas cards this year because I'm skint, but I might do a video or a song or something else that's Quite Nice.

Anyway, what else is new? Not a lot. Mostly I'm just mooching about, making the most out of being 'between jobs' by writing, writing, writing (including a thing here for Josie Long's Hundred Days to Make Me a Better Person, where I'm writing a 100 word vignette every day for 100 days; I have only a vague idea of where it was going, and it was totally boring the shit out of me, so I have introduce a sassy ghost to keep me amused), trying to come up with a project that will lead to excessive wealth/the jealousy admiration of my peers and... watching a lot of Loose Women.

And, also, tweeting! I'm SirMichaelBush, add me, we can totally be best friends. X Factor is finished, as well, so you won't have to put up with 'OMG LLOYYDDS ARES SOOOO HOTT' every Saturday. A crying shame, I'm sure you'll agree!

God, I used to be so good at this. I'm sad that LiveJournal is sort of dying, but whenever I sign in I'm like, 'Shall I make a post? What have I got to whinge about?' and then I think, 'well, you can't come back just to whinge at people, what would Britney do?' and then I sign out again.

I know! I'll do a load of 'end of year/decade' lists over the next couple of days. That'll keep the punters happy! It's worked for all the papers, anyway. The Guardian's 'decade in...' series made me weep, just a load of miserable old twats going 'wah wah everything is rubbish and not like it used to be', which is a load of old shit, because even the last year of the decade has given us the ascent of Lady Gaga, the greatest popstar ever to have lived, and a couple of really good telly things. The Guardian touted that awful half-improvised thing with the guy from Mock the Week and a load of kids playing the world's least likely siblings as the only 'classic' the end of the decade had to offer, though, so maybe they should just shut up and fuck off where print journalism belongs, ie. THE PAST.

FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TOLD ME! Isn't the Rage Against the Machine thing a load of old shit? Yes, is the answer you're looking for.
